At the end of August there will once again be events online and in different countries in celebration of the World Day for the End of Speciesism. This is a very diverse event in which people and organizations with very different backgrounds and approaches participate. What unites the participants in this event is the view that speciesism is an unacceptable form of discrimination to which we should put an end.
Speciesism is discrimination against those who don’t belong to a certain species. It means giving different moral consideration to beings of different species for unjust reasons. As a consequence of speciesism, many nonhuman animals are harmed by human beings today. Those in other situations are also gravely affected by speciesism, such as animals in the wild who suffer greatly for numerous reasons (both anthropogenic and due to natural harms) even though there are many ways we could help them. In addition, many nonhuman animals are treated comparatively worse than other aninals in ways that are speciesist too.
Animal Ethics will participate again in this event by giving free talks about the reasons to reject speciesism and the implications this has. The talks will be broadcast on all of our YouTube channels in three different languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The talk in English will be given twice on August 26th, so people from all over the world can attend regardless of their time zone.
