Animal Ethics 2023 Year in Review

2023 was an extremely active and fruitful year for Animal Ethics. We continued our efforts on educational outreach about key issues like speciesism, wild animal suffering, and longtermism. We engaged diverse audiences globally through talks, workshops, and publications. We also advanced our presence internationally, especially in Asia.

Outreach activities

In 2023, Animal Ethics representatives gave over 58 talks worldwide on the topics of antispeciesism, wild animal welfare, longtermism, and effective animal advocacy. We spoke at conferences, workshops, universities, libraries, and other venues across Europe, Asia, North and South America. This includes talks in the United States, Spain, India, Nepal, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Mexico, the UK, Portugal, and more.

We greatly expanded our social media reach, upgrading our look and posting more frequently on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok. Our content spotlights insect and aquatic animal exploitation, longtermism, future suffering risks, and other crucial concerns. We have a social media presence in four languages, allowing us to engage meaningfully with more communities worldwide. Overall, we have over 189,000 YouTube views and 640,000 followers across 17 channels in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

Teachers workshop

In February, March, October, November and December, we hosted five workshops equipping Spanish-speaking teachers to introduce key animal ethics concepts in their classrooms. Over 70 teachers participated, allowing them to implement our educational materials on speciesism and establish networks for youth outreach.

Publication highlights

This year we published a survey of admissions to wild animal hospitals in Canada, a review of contraception methods for wild animals, and a paper of countering objections to helping wild animals. Luciano Cunha and Oscar Horta authored chapters in a new book in Portuguese examining speciesism, wild animal suffering, and longtermism.

International expansion

In 2023, Animal Ethics greatly expanded our work in Asia, giving talks and connecting with advocates in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Nepal, India, Hong Kong, and beyond. We launched our website in Telugu and are working on translations into Arabic, Korean, and Simplified Chinese. Our materials are now available in 11 languages across over 1,950 pages.

Conclusion

2023 was our most active year yet at Animal Ethics. Through talks, workshops, content creation, and steady global expansion, we continue working toward our goal of attitude and institutional change to reduce wild animal suffering and increase moral consideration for all sentient beings.
